Projects that changed markets.

Every project below delivered measurable impact: revenue growth, cost reduction, policy change, or infrastructure deployed at scale.

Tim presenting the Ballard Xcelsior CHARGE FC fuel cell electric bus evolution on stage
Project 01
Director, North America Market Development

Scaling the fuel cell bus market 50x

Ballard Power Systems
Challenge
When I joined, Ballard was shipping roughly 4 fuel cell bus modules a year in North America. Transit agencies saw hydrogen as a science project. Battery-electric was eating the narrative.
What I did
Built the first NA market development function from scratch. Stood up a Salesforce pipeline tracking every transit prospect across the continent. Wrote and led winning grant applications with agency partners. Testified at CARB, CPUC, and CEC on operational data. Co-founded the United States Hydrogen Alliance to align manufacturer and operator voices.
Outcome
200+ modules per year by 2024. Hydrogen fuel cell buses now in revenue service at SunLine, AC Transit, OCTA, and others. North America moved from afterthought to a strategic Ballard market.

Project 02
Director of R&D

The world's best-selling small wind turbine

Southwest Windpower
Challenge
The flagship turbine had a 50% warranty return rate. Survival in 110 mph winds was not reliable. The product was bleeding cash and credibility.
What I did
Led a ground-up redesign of the alternator, blade set, and control system. Drove the first-ever UL 1741 certification in the residential small-wind category. Rebuilt the field service playbook with installers.
Outcome
Warranty claims dropped under 5%. Sales tripled inside 24 months. The product became the global category leader and shipped to more than 80 countries.

$5M microgrid for wildfire resilience

Santa Rosa Junior College
Challenge
After successive PG&E public safety shutoffs, SRJC needed 21 buildings to stay operational through multi-day grid outages. Diesel was not the answer.
What I did
Wrote the winning CEC EPIC proposal. Designed the solar + storage + controls architecture. Coordinated PG&E interconnection, campus electrical, and emergency operations teams.
Outcome
A $5M islanded microgrid that powers critical campus operations during wildfire shutoffs and shaves peak demand the rest of the year.
Continental Wind direct-drive turbine nacelle and generator assembly on the test floor
Project 04
VP Engineering

Concept to certified prototype in 12 months

Continental Wind
Challenge
A startup with a novel direct-drive generator architecture, an investor deadline, and no certified hardware in the field.
What I did
Rebuilt the engineering team and the development plan. Brought the design through IEC 61400-2 certification testing. Aligned procurement, manufacturing, and field test in parallel rather than in sequence.
Outcome
Certified prototype installed and producing power inside the 12-month window. The milestone unlocked the next funding round.
Sierra Northern Railway hydrogen fuel cell locomotive SERA 193 on the tracks
Project 05
Grant Author and Strategy Lead

Rescuing a failed grant into a $4M win

Sierra Northern Railway
Challenge
A previous hydrogen locomotive grant proposal had been declined. The partners were ready to walk away from the program.
What I did
Rebuilt the application from the ground up. Repositioned the project around freight corridor air quality and operational data the agency cared about. Restructured the partner contributions and budget narrative.
Outcome
$4M awarded. The first commercial hydrogen freight locomotive in the US is now in build.

Market Development Lead

Hydrogen refueling infrastructure strategy

Ballard + transit agencies
Challenge
Agencies wanted fuel cell buses but had no fueling plan that pencilled out at fleet scale.
What I did
Built a refueling deployment playbook tied to route data and depot footprint. Brokered alignment between OEMs, fuel providers, and operators. Helped agencies sequence pilot, expansion, and full-fleet phases against grant timing.
Outcome
Multiple agencies adopted the framework as their internal planning standard. Hydrogen refueling moved from blocker to predictable program element.
ZECAP fuel cell electric yard truck demonstration project at the Port of Los Angeles
Project 07
Grant Author and Strategy Lead

ZECAP: zero-emission yard truck at the Port of LA

GTI, TraPac, Capacity, BAE Systems
Challenge
Key partners pulled out mid-application and the team was ready to withdraw, putting a CARB demonstration award for a fuel cell electric yard truck at the Port of Los Angeles at risk.
What I did
Revised the grant proposal from the ground up, reconfigured the partner structure around GTI, TraPac, Capacity, and BAE Systems, and rallied the remaining team to resubmit a credible, fundable plan.
Outcome
$4M CARB award. The project was executed successfully, putting a hydrogen fuel cell yard truck into demonstration service at the Port of LA.
Aerial view of rooftop solar photovoltaic arrays on the City of Del Mar Civic Center
Project 08
Principal Advisor, Center for Sustainable Energy

Solar + storage backup for Del Mar Civic Center

Center for Sustainable Energy / City of Del Mar
Challenge
The City of Del Mar's new Civic Center needed reliable backup power for essential municipal operations, and the project required a credible technical and economic case to secure CEC grant funding.
What I did
Designed the 71 kW rooftop solar PV and 41 kWh battery storage system. Ran the economic analysis, system performance modeling, and installation planning that anchored the CEC grant proposal, and translated the design into the city's RFP.
Outcome
$389K CEC grant awarded. The system was procured against the RFP that grew out of this design and now provides critical-load backup for Civic Center operations.
